Felger: Matthew Poitras is ‘too good to be true’
Boston Bruins center Matthew Poitras has been lighting up preseason play.
On Friday’s Felger & Mazz program, the guys discuss whether Poitras will make the opening day roster. Felger thinks Bruins fans need to pump the brakes on Poitras…
FULL CONVERSATION
Felger: We’ll fill the show with some opening takes, and I’ll go first.
Guess who scored again last night for the Bruins? Not that you’re paying attention to preseason hockey, but guess who scored last night for the Boston Bruins?
Mazz: Poitras?
Felger: Poitras. There you go, Mazz. What did Fluto call Poitras?
Mazz: The “breakout prospect” of camp?
Felger: Yes, the breakout prospect of camp. The leading scorer for the Bruins in the preseason, if you care. After the game, Jim Montgomery spoke like he was an automatic to make the team.
This kid is a 19-year-old that they drafted in the second-round last year. And he’s been a breakout prospect in camp. I say this because that’s what Fluto called him in The Athletic three days ago. And those two words, “breakout prospect,” caught my eye. I can’t remember the last time the Bruins had a breakout prospect. It was probably David Pastrnak. But Pasta was a first-round pick, so he had a chance to make the roster right out of the chute.
Wouldn’t you know it? Poitras is a center. He’s in the exact position of need, both in terms of position and the Bruins’ desperate need for young talent on this team.
Don Sweeney has had some bad drafts, and now out of nowhere, here comes this kid. He’ll probably make the team too. He hasn’t been skating in the top six but should be.
File this all under, as I’ve said all week, the “too good to be true” category. Too good to be true! So, you’re telling me that the year Patrice Bergeron retires, the year that they hamstring themselves against the cap–the position is filled by someone young-emerging?
Everyone looks at the Bruins’ system and says that they have nothing. And all of a sudden here comes Matthew Poitras. Here we go!
He’s going to make the team. He’s got nine games to prove it, and that’s not even a totally drop-dead kind of thing. But really, after nine games, you got to decide: is he here or not?
If this kid is for real, talk about the Bruins getting a total gift. But, for now, I would file this under “too good to be true.”
