NFL tables talks on banning ‘tush push’
The infamous ‘tush push’ will live to see another day, at least temporarily, as the proposal to ban the play has been “tabled” by NFL owners, per Dianna Russini. So, voting to ban or permit the play will be revisited on an unknown, later date — possibly at the next league meeting in May.
Although the result is better than an outright banning of the play, those like the Eagles who support keeping it do not view the postponement as a win. That is probably because the delay gives time for the proposal’s language to be adjusted, so a ban of some effect could be more likely.
The voting being ‘tabled’ does prove how controversial the play actually is. Both sides seem to have solid cases. The opposition think it’s not in the nature of the game and provides an unfair competitive advantage, which seems like a decent argument. Conversely, proponents of the play also make a fair point that it’s kind of odd to ban a singular play, and that all teams can run the play. However, a team must be constructed in a certain way for it to be effective.
So, it will be interesting to see when voters reconvene what they finally decide the future of the play, but for now discussions have adjourned with indecision.
