Albert Breer: Mike Vrabel holds all the cards with the Patriots
On Thursday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Albert Breer of SI and MMQB joined the show to discuss how Mike Vrabel holds all the cards with the Patriots.
After failure like this, you want someone who has looked in the mirror…
Albert Breer:
You look after failure like this for someone to look in the mirror. You know what I mean? Like just say, you know what we messed up. If you’re really looking in the mirror. If you’re not just going up there and saying what somebody told you to say or what you think is the right thing. There’s a real process of looking in the mirror and a lot of times, a lot of these owners have to stub their toe a bunch to get there. Like you know, I bring up the 49ers as a good example of it. Where they went one and done. They blew the wrong guy out. Like they decided to keep the GM and fire the coach when they fired Jim Harbaugh, right? And then they go through 2 one and dones and it took going through all of that for Jed York to finally get it. To say, you know what, I got to go find good people and empower them, and even then, it wasn’t perfect. They really liked Sean McVay and then lost him to the Rams. Then they tried to hire Josh McDaniels, and Josh backed out at the last second. Then eventually, they wound up with Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch because they went through a whole process and got there because they were taking a hard look at their football operation and now, they’re one of the most consistent winners over the last seven or eight years in the league. It would alarm me if I was Vrabel looking at this and looking at how quickly it all came undone.
Marc Bertrand:
Do you think he’s going to be interviewing ownership as much as they will be interviewing him today?
Albert Breer:
Yes, and I think where they could get put in a tough spot is if Mike wants an answer. You know what I mean? They could sit in the room and be like, man maybe we should do a real process, but if Mike wants an answer, Mike wants an answer. He holds all the cards.
