Patriots coordinator interviews for new job
New England Patriots defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington will reportedly interview for the same job with the Cincinnati Bengals.
New England Patriots defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington will interview for the same job with the Cincinnati Bengals on Wednesday, according to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Covington is still on the Patriots’ staff, but the team game permission for Covington to interview elsewhere according to Pelissero.
While the Patriots did not fire any of their other coaches along with head coach Jerod Mayo, the status of those coaches is up in the air. The Patriots’ new head coach expected to have say over the staff and will likely want to bring in his own people to work with.
Covington, 35, joined the Patriots as a coaching assistant in 2017 after five years at the college level. He then coached outside linebackers and the defensive line, before being promoted to defensive coordinator this year. Under Covington the Patriots had the 22nd ranked defense in the NFL allowing 24.5 points per game.
One of Covington’s defense’s better performances this year came against the Bengals in Week 1. The Bengals’ 10 points in that game were a season low, and their 224 yards was their second-lowest total of the year by one yard.
The Bengals are trying to replace defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, who was fired on Monday after six years with the team. Under Anarumo the Bengals finished with the 25th ranked defense in the NFL. That was a fall off from two years ago when Cincinnati had the sixth-ranked defense in the league.
