Two Red Sox named finalists for 2024 Gold Glove awards
Center fielder Jarren Duran and right fielder Wilyer Abreu represent the Boston Red Sox among the 2024 Gold Glove finalists.
On Tuesday, Major League Baseball announced the finalists for this year’s Gold Glove Award winners. That list includes two members of the Boston Red Sox – both in the outfield and both first-time finalists.
In center field for the American League, Jarren Duran is one of three finalists. The 28-year-old led all MLB outfielders with 12 assists this season, and ranked second in the Majors with 23 defensive runs saved. He’s a finalist along with Daulton Varsho of the Toronto Blue Jays and Jake Meyers of the Houston Astros.
Over in right field, rookie Wilyer Abreu gets the nomination. He picked up nine outfield assists this year, and led all right fielders with 18 defensive runs saved. Abreu is up against Juan Soto of the New York Yankees and Jo Adell of the Los Angeles Angels. If he wins, Abreu would be the first Red Sox rookie to win a Gold Glove since Fred Lynn in 1975.

There was one surprise snub for the Red Sox, in Ceddanne Rafaela. This season Rafaela became the first player in the modern era (since 1901) to start at least 60 games at both shortstop (82) and center field (87), which seemingly made him a candidate for the ‘Utility’ category. Instead the nominees there are Mauricio Dubon of the Houston Astros, Willi Castro of the Minnesota Twins, and Dylan Moore of the Seattle Mariners. All three finished with fewer runs saved than Rafaela.
Three former Red Sox players are also among the nominees. Yankees left fielder Alex Verdugo, Braves pitcher Chris Sale, and Dodgers utility player Kiké Hernandez are all up for the award as well.
The full list of finalists can be found here. Winners will be announced Sunday, Nov. 3.
