Zolak & Bertand: Is Matt Judon worth the distraction?
On Monday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, we question whether Matt Judon is worth the distraction for the Patriots right now.
What puts Jerod Mayo in the best position?
Joe Murray:
So I think it’s better off long-term, Tim, that Matt Judon is with the Patriots because he’s a recruiter even though he’s bad at it.
Tim McKone:
He tries to be a recruiter. I don’t know if he’s recruited anyone before to the Patriots, right? He’s tried.
Joe Murray:
You have the game plan for him, and he will help make the defense better if healthy. I guess that’s the big thing here. So, do I think they will trade him? Probably not, but this whole tweeting thing, you know, now getting involved in that on social media. The Pats don’t like that stuff.
Tim McKone:
No, and what did we say throughout the whole Mac Jones era in New England? It was how do you set this kid up to be successful and whether the Patriots did it with the offensive line with Matt Patricia or with the wide receivers. The answer was always no, no, no, no. Well, in terms of your first-year head coach, are you setting him up for success if the leader of the defense is bitching and retweeting stuff on Twitter about potential trades and is unhappy about his contract and holding out? Or is a distraction in the locker room or isn’t happy with his current contract in the locker room and he’s vocal about that situation with a young nucleus that you’re trying to build around? Like to me, that’s not setting up Jerod Mayo to have success in year one to have that type of distraction going on in his first training camp. You talked about sort of the core of this team moving forward, the guy is going to turn 32 in a few days, if you wind up having Drake Maye as that quarterback and he winds up being a stud and you’re off and running here with this young nucleus that you’re building. Is Matthew Judon really in the timetable that you’re going to take off and be successful? Probably not. So, for me, I would trade him for that third-round pick or whatever it winds up being and I would move off of him just because I don’t want that distraction in my locker room and it’s not someone that’s actually going to be a long term.
