Felger on Belichick ovation: I thought that was pretty cool
Bill Belichick got a massive ovation from the Gillette Stadium crowd at the Tom Brady Patriots Hall of Fame ceremony on Wednesday night. On Thursday’s Felger and Mazz, Felger gave his thoughts on the ovation.
Felger: What I really feel is…good for you (Patriots fans). Like he deserves it.
Mazz: I felt that way too.
Felger: It’s a great run. That’s what you’re celebrating. You’re celebrating the 20 years. You’re celebrating that run with Tom Brady. And so celebrate that and you’re able to separate the two so you know what? Pretty good moment.
Mazz: Yeah, and I would say that’s one you’ll remember forever. You know there are things that come along with playing here that are negatives. But there’s also a payoff if it’s good. And that’s it. You don’t get that in a lot of places. Like the first thing that popped into my mind was the night they put Bobby Orr’s number up and he got like a 7 minute ovation, or whatever it was, at the Boston Garden. That kind of stuff doesn’t happen everywhere. It doesn’t. And I thought Belichick was a colossal pain in the ass for most of the 20 years, but his performance here was indisputable and the accomplishment could not be debated. So they didn’t get a chance, the fans didn’t, to wish him off. And he got fired. It was ugly. So a few months have gone by, they’ve drafted another kid, he comes back. In that way it was a Belichick appreciation too.
Felger: The Belichick moment, I find it fascinating. Because again, I think most people were good with the team firing him. I think over 50% of fans wanted Bill gone and were done with him. The people that wanted him gone felt strongly about it. There was a lot of anti-Belichick sentiment here over the last couple of years, and it certainly wasn’t 100% to nothing, but it was, I think it was over 50%, wanted him gone. And the ones that wanted him gone were strong about it. And he did a lot of wrong things, alot of bad things that put you where you are, which is at the bottom of the league. And yet, when it came time to that moment, it’s like, well, what? What are we doing here? We’re going to celebrate you for the run because that’s what this is about. So I thought that was pretty good and deserved for Belichick. I thought that was pretty cool.
