Report: Patriots Interested In Free-Agent Cornerback Patrick Robinson (UPDATE: Robinson Signs With Saints)
UPDATE: Ian Rapoport says Patrick Robinson is signing with the New Orleans Saints.
There’s a chance that Patrick Robinson leaves the Super Bowl champions for the team that they beat.
The Eagles’ soon-to-be-free-agent cornerback is drawing interest from the Patriots, according to a report by Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal. The 30-year-old Robinson played well as Philadelphia’s slot corner in 2017, playing in all 16 games and snagging 4 interceptions to go with 18 passes defensed.
Robinson would fit well as a slot defender on the Patriots defense, who just lost Malcolm Butler to the Tennessee Titans. If he were to sign with the Pats, then Eric Rowe would presumably be pegged as the No. 2 outside corner next to Stephon Gilmore with Robinson manning the inside.
Eagles fans will best remember Robinson for the pick-six he got against former Vikings quarterback Case Keenum in the NFC Championship Game.
A signing like Robinson may not excite Patriots fans like Richard Sherman or Aqib Talib would have. But Robinson would certainly represent an upgrade over Johnson Bademosi at cornerback and give them a reliable underneath corner.
