McCarthy: The Red Sox are still unwilling to spend on starting pitching
The Boston Red Sox made some news on Wednesday by acquiring starting pitcher Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox in exchange four four prospects including one of their top prospects, Kyle Teel. On Wednesday’s Felger and Mazz, Matt McCarthy was filling in for Mazz and talked about how the Boston Red Sox are still unwilling to spend money on starting pitching.
Matt McCarthy: But the story here guys is the Red Sox still are not willing to spend money on starting pitching. They have gone out and they have improved this team which this is their number one need, and they’ve addressed this. But the reason they’re trading prospects now is because they didn’t want to compete for Max Fried at the top of the market. They probably don’t want to compete for Corbin Burnes at the top of the market. You should be doing both. You should be signing Corbin Burnes or signing Max Fried and trading for Garrett Crochet. They’ve done the cheaper option here. It’s made them better for 2025 so I don’t want to complain about that, but until the Red Sox go out and sign a big name pitcher at the top of the market, it is still fair for us to say why aren’t you doing that? Why aren’t you spending the money and committing the years that you should to a pitcher of that quality. They still haven’t done that yet. They’re still holding back. They’re better, it’s good. I’m happy about this trade, but you still should criticize them for that.
