Agenda Free Friday: Dinner etiquette with Jim Murray
It was a true Agenda Free Friday with Jim Murray, Joe Murray, and Matt McCarthy hosting Felger and Mazz on Friday. During the show the topic of splitting checks came up and Jim Murray had something to say about splitting checks when it comes to a group meal.
Don’t Ask for a Split Check
Jim Murray: Please don’t tell me any of you guys are separate check guys.
Joe Murray: No, no, no. But. No. No, I am not. But I will tell you this, Murray’s Musings, if you’re going out in a group get the most expensive thing on the menu because you’re paying for it anyways.
Jim Murray: Thank you. Thank you. And if anyone starts bitching like that’s their problem, “I need a separate check. My wife was only having a salad”. Tough. If you’re having the group meal, you’re in so you might as well buy a bottle of Camus too and pour yourself a spite glass. You don’t even have to drink it. Pour it, look at it, no one else gets to have it. Have a glass of spite wine. I don’t care. But if you’re in, you’re in. There’s no separate category with that.
Joe Murray: I’m so happy you agree on that.
Jim Murray: Oh, Joe, it makes me crazy. “Well, I need to itemize that, she didn’t have that much”, tough you brought her.
J-Stew: So we split it five ways and it’s one card and we’re Venmoing whoever’s card, it’s going to.
Matt McCarthy: You take the points, baby.
Jim Murray: This is part of my like, my ethos of “don’t inconvenience other people”, it’s the greatest gift you can give to humankind. Don’t inconvenience other people. Don’t make the server’s job harder. ” “Can you split the six ways”, oh eff off. Oh, get out of my face with that. So, no, you better pay. That’s right, get the most expensive thing on the menu, Joe, because we’re all paying for it.
Matt McCarthy: Here’s the thing, if you want to split the check….
Jim Murray: Oh split check is fine…
Matt McCarthy: You want to itemize it, do it on your own.
Jim Murray: But if it’s eight of us? No shot. No.
Matt McCarthy: But if you want to do that on your own time, have at it. And then, you know, if you want to be the person who hands in the card, you take a picture of the check, you itemize it, you send it out perfectly fine. Don’t ever make the server do it ever.
