Off-Air Show: Top bass players according to Felger
On this week’s episode of the Off-Air Show with Mike Felger, Jim Murray joins the show. The guys kickoff the show with a full Dead & Co. concert recap (this is your warning) at Fenway Park and move on to other topics including discussion on the biggest bassist superstars in history, thanks to the listener comments.
Felger: “Who’s a better bassist, Getty Lee or Timothy B. Schmidt?”
Murray: “Uhhhhh…
Felger: “Who’s Tim Schmidt, I don’t know who that is” (he’s from The Eagles by the way)
Murray: “Ugh, he’s in some big band. I mean does he sing like Getty Lee at the same time? That I find so crazy the bassists, you’re trying to carry the rhythm and then you sing at the same time, I find that to be such an incredible talent.”
Felger: “Well, top five bass players. Ok, well, I don’t know if they’re pure bass, the biggest bass players stars…”
Felger’s top five…
- Paul McCartney
- Sting
- Getty Lee
- John Entwhistle (here he lies at #5 but Felger says he’s the best of all time…Felger & Mazz math)
- John Paul Jones
Felger: “Bassist superstar, who else am I missing though? Getty Lee was definitely one. Um, like who was the, Getty Lee was the front man who played bass. Sting was a front man who played bass…”
Murray: “I mean everyone else is a side part…Flea”
Felger: “Flea! He’s one of the great bass players of all time. I know you hate the Peppers but he’s a great player.”
Murray: “oh, the lead singer of Primus, he played bass. Les Claypool, monster musician.”
