PHOTOS: Nike unveils new Celtics ‘City Edition’ alternate uniform

On Monday, the NBA revealed this year’s ‘City Edition’ NBA jerseys for all 30 teams. That means the Celtics are adding another alternate uniform to their rotation.

According to the NBA Locker Vision website, “The Boston Celtics new City Edition uniform is part of the 2021-22 Nike NBA City Edition Moments Mixtape theme. In celebration of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary, this on-court collection was designed to showcase the iconic moments of each franchise. This uniform pays homage to those iconic moments with subtle nods to some of the greatest to ever wear green.”

The description goes on to identify elements of the uniform that pay homage to different eras in the team’s history. Here’s a closer look at what went into this new design.

• 1949: Jersey Wordmark & Numbers

  This font is borrowed from the 1949 Celtics. The style didn't last long in Boston, but it's making a comeback this year.

• 1988: Jersey Nameplate Block Nod to Warmup Jackets

  The iconic Celtics warm-up jackets get a nod with the design of the nameplate. It's also the first time a modern Celtics uniform has had the player's name below their number, which has become a trend in the NBA in recent years.

• 1965: Jersey Arm and Neck Tape

  The piping around the arms and neck is reminiscent of the style worn in the mid-60's, a variation of which is still used today.
• 1946: Remixed Short Design with 1986 Tape

  The shorts design is a mashup tying together two looks the team wore 40 years apart.

• ‘Cigar Smoke’ on both Short Panels

  Share

  No, those shorts aren't dirty. That's 'cigar smoke' on the sides at the bottom - a tribute to Red Auerbach.

• 1960: Logo on Short Belt Buckle

  The original Lucky the Leprechaun mascot makes an appearance on the front of the waistband of the shorts. Variations of this logo were used from 1950-1968, before the more well-known ball-spinning lucky was introduced.

  Here's another look at that Lucky logo, which will also be featured on warm-up shirts when the team wears these uniforms.

• Red Logo on Right Short Panel

  Another tribute to the legendary Red Auerbach - a former coach, general manager, and president of the Celtics - is on the right side of the shorts.

• Boston Celtics 75th Anniversary Commemorative Logo on Left Short Panel

  The Celtics' version of the NBA's 75th anniversary logo is on the opposite side of the shorts.
• Banners, banners, banners

  Share

  Auerbach is honored on the jersey as well, with a quote above the 'jock tag' which reads "the Boston Celtics are not a basketball team, they're a way of life."
  
  Below that quote is an imprint of the Celtics' retired number banners, while sitting below the tag are 17 shamrocks representing the organization's 17 NBA titles.

  The NBA's league-wide 75th anniversary logo makes an appearance on the shorts.

• Nike logo

  The Nike logo is opposite the NBA logo on the shorts.

  The Celtics will debut this look for their Nov. 12 home game, when they host the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks.

The Celtics also tweeted some photos with the current team modeling the uniforms.
