Reiss: Patriots offense so inept, that was tough to watch
On Monday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Mike Reiss joined the show explain why coaching is mainly at fault for the New England Patriots.
Reiss: ‘Tighten It Up’
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: Scott Zolak called it the worst loss since Tom Brady left the New England Patriots. I don’t know how you would quantify that, but in terms of gameplay was this one of the worst games you’ve seen from a football standpoint from both teams?
Mike Reiss: That was a lot of bad football, Fred. I was thinking back, it almost brought me back to the early 90s. They thought I was brought back to that time when they played good defense. However, the offense was so inept. That was tough to watch.
Hardy: Fred made a point earlier in the show, Mike, that the Patriots used their training camp to go out and try and win the first game or two. Other teams that knew they’d be going to have a good season, went out and tried to prepare for the entirety of this season, maybe even thinking about the playoffs, thinking about long-term, health and well-being,
Do you agree with that notion? And what do you make of that strategy, if that’s what you think the Patriots were doing?
Mike Reiss: So, here’s the way I look at it, Hardy. I think they’ve got to tighten this thing up. I think [the problem] is more about coaching. Let’s start with those 12 penalties for 104 yards. One of those penalties was 12 men on the field on a punt return when Joshua Uche was trying to run off the field. And I don’t know why no one saw that and tried to call a time out knowing that it’s fourth and one. And a penalty means that the Dolphins are keeping the ball.
Who is watching this? Where is the breakdown? Tighten it up.
So, I think it’s more about to me that stuff. Or it’s a horse collar tackle and then roughing the passer, etc. Like what are we doing here?
