Callahan: I think we’ll see Patriots coaching changes after season
On Tuesday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Andrew Callahan predicts that the New England Patriots will make coaching changes after the season.
Callahan: Patriots Coaching Changes?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Callahan: In the NFL, some teams with bad records win one-score games, and then it’s flipped the next season.
Fred Toucher: Ok, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Kansas City is winning these close games.
Callahan: No, I’m just saying that good teams can lose close games. And vice versa.
Toucher: How much of that can be learned? It’s a fact that they’re not winning close games now. Does that concern you for the future with this coaching staff?
Callahan: Not yet, because I think we’ll see changes to this coaching staff within the first week or two after the season. This is me reading tea leaves.
Also, Jerod Mayo commented yesterday that I don’t think got a whole lot of publicity. Someone asked him, “Jerod, what are you doing during the bye week?” And he said something like, “I’m going to get away and I’m going to think about these conversations and decisions that will come up on us real fast in the offseason.”
Free agency is not until March and the NFL Draft is not until April. What happens the first week after the season? Coaching changes. And everyone makes a big deal with head coaches. I don’t think Jerod Mayo is going anywhere. But what about the coordinators and assistants? The Bears and Jets have assistants who could bolt to the Patriots now that their head coaches have been fired.
Toucher: Alright yeah, the self-scouting is important, as you know. Like, in the bye week, these teams self-scout. There might be some internal flaws they’re seeing throughout the season that they want to correct. Who do you think is most likely to be replaced? What changes do you think will be made?
Callahan: Yeah, I want to underscore that this is just speculation. This isn’t unique to the Patriots, but most teams examine positions that are underperforming relative to the talent.
Or in a rebuild, who’s not developing? The Patriots took two receivers in the 1st four rounds of the draft and they haven’t had a catch between them in weeks.
The offensive line is another position that’s been struggling. There’s been a lack of continuity and some of that is injuries. So that’s just bad luck for Scott Peters, who’s the rookie offensive line coach.
But that’s the most important position on staff after the coordinators because you’re dealing with more players and half of the offense.
