The Patriots are on the clock
The Patriots fell to the Chargers 40-7 at Gillette stadium on Sunday putting the teams record and 3-13 on the season. It was a terrible performance from the home team who was coming off an encouraging loss to the Buffalo Bills. It was a reminder how far way this team is away from success and that the future is still unclear after an offseason of change. Imagine two six game losing streaks in the same season? Welcome to the Jerod Mayo led New England football team. Or should a say this is what it looks like when ownership gets involved in football decisions. Should I even mention the team has only won two games at home over the last two season. And the first time they have back to back sub 4 win seasons for the first time since they were the Boston Patriots at the end of the 1960’s. This is a complete disaster and one of the worst organization in the NFL. And having the number 1 pick in the nfl draft proves that you are in fact the worst team in football.
I thought this would be the worst team in the NFL this season. I had the under when the win total of 5.5 was announced. I took under 4.5 wins when the line got adjusted after the preseason. I also bet the Patriots would have the fewest wins in the NFL this season. The Giants win over the Colts on Sunday now moves the Patriots into the top spot with a week to go. I will admit the Patriots roster this season was short on talent. But there were many winnable games on the schedule and the lack of experience on the coaching staff was glaring. It’s not all on Mayo and it certainly starts at the top. Chants of “fire Mayo” were heard after the game. The loss to the Chargers was emotional. One that makes you think this whole thing needs to be gutted and a restart. The Chargers did that this offseason and now are a playoff team. That happened in one season. How long will it take for the Patriots?
They have a chance next week against Buffalo to win a game at home and stay out of the conversation of least amount of wins for the season. They could lock that in by not playing Drake Maye against Buffalo. I still think there is value in winning the final game of the season. Maye will also get reps for the final time before the offseason begins. If he doesn’t play, he would only be able to work out with the team during OTA’s. Who knows what they look like then? I would shut him down and get the number 1 pick. That along with Maye is all the Patriots can hang onto when looking for their next leader or free agents. The Patriots are on the clock.
