Patriots sign LB Jay Person after rookie minicamp tryout
The New England Patriots are signing outside linebacker Jay Person after his rookie minicamp tryout with the team over the weekend.
Over the weekend the New England Patriots hosted their two-day rookie minicamp. Those practices included the team’s eight draft pick as well as signed UDFAs. In addition to those players, there were 23 players in attendance on a tryout basis (meaning they didn’t count against the active roster).
One of those players – edge rusher Jay Person from Chattanooga – apparently impressed the team enough to get a longer look from the coaching staff. On Monday the team signed Person to an undrafted rookie contract, according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson.

Person, 24, was a starter for the last three years at Chattanooga. He had 23 sacks in 33 games in that time, with 9.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss in 12 games last year. Person was named to the All-SoCon team each of the last three years and was SoCon Defensive Player of the Year in 2022. He was also named an All-American that season.
Listed at 6-foot-2, 237 pounds on the Patriots’ rookie minicamp roster, Person profiles as an outside linebacker in the Patriots’ defense. He’ll likely compete for a depth pass rushing specialist role.
Now officially on the Patriots, Person joins an outside linebacker group that brings a lot of depth into the 2024 season. That position is led by Matthew Judon, Josh Uche, and Anfernee Jennings. Other edge rushers on the roster include Keion White, Oshane Ximines, and UDFA John Morgan.
After signing Person the Patriots active roster sits at 89 players. They have one open roster spot with OTAs beginning next week.
