Patriots claim former Navy quarterback off waivers
The New England Patriots may have their 53-man roster set, but the tinkering is not done for Bill Belichick’s squad, as the team claimed former Navy quarterback Malcolm Perry off waivers from the Miami Dolphins.
But the Patriots, who have just one quarterback on their initial 53-man roster, are not getting a true quarterback here.
Drafted by the Dolphins with the No. 246 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Perry quickly converted to running back and wide receiver, and spent all of the 2021 preseason as a wide receiver, with six catches on eight targets for 110 yards in three preseason contests this summer. Listed at 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds, Perry appeared in nine games for the Dolphins in 2020, with three rushes for five yards and one 12-yard punt return to his name.
Prior to his jump to the NFL, Perry spent four years with Navy, where he totaled 1,084 passing yards and seven touchdowns in one year as their starting quarterback, and 4,359 rushing yards and 40 rushing scores over his collegiate career.
In essence, the Patriots are getting a good ol’ fashioned (hashtag) football player.
The move for Perry comes with none of the Patriots cut yesterday claimed off waivers, and with the team expected to bring Brian Hoyer back to the mix when the dust settles on their upcoming round of roster maneuvering.
