Patriots keep just one quarterback on initial 53-man roster
Cam Newton wasn’t the only Patriots quarterback released on Tuesday. Brian Hoyer Per the wire, the Patriots have released QB Brian Hoyer.
Hoyer’s release came after he wasn’t present at practice on Tuesday afternoon. However, there’s a chance he could return soon – the Patriots will likely open up a roster spot or two after placing players on injured reserve.
Without Hoyer, Mac Jones is the lone quarterback remaining on the Patriots’ roster. Even if and when Hoyer returns, the Patriots may want to keep a third arm to add to their depth with a rookie at the top of the depth chart.
Hoyer’s release wasn’t the only roster move that flew under the radar until the official NFL wire came out Tuesday afternoon. Linebacker Anfernee Jennings was also placed on IR, which officially trimmed the roster to 53 players.
