Mac Jones gets his first Madden rating
With the start of football season comes the start of Madden season, with EA Sports’ popular NFL video game less than a month from its release. In anticipation of the game dropping, EA started revealing the overall rating of select players on Sunday.
Included in the first group of overall releases were some of the more high profile rookies, including Patriots’ first round pick Mac Jones. The release included a video with Jones’ reacting live to his own rating.

The 71 rating makes Jones the fifth-highest rating rookie quarterback, which makes sense for the fifth quarterback picked in the draft. Trevor Lawrence tops the group at a 78, while Zach Wilson received a 75 and Trey Lance and Justin Field are each rated 74. Tight end Kyle Pitts got the highest rookie rating, he is an 81.
As training camp begins, Jones will compete for the Patriots’ starting quarterback job with Cam Newton. Newton finished last season rated a 75 overall (rating are adjusted each week), and should begin Madden 22 in the same ballpark. If that’s the case, it seemingly would be an accurate representation of the depth chart, with Newton still recognized as the starter and holding a slight advantage on the depth chart.
Two other Patriots had their ratings revealed on Sunday as well. Tight end Jonnu Smith will be an 81 overall, while long snapper Joe Cardona received a 26, the same rating as most players at his position. Madden doesn’t recognize long snapper as a position and counts them all as tight ends.
More Madden ratings will be revealed throughout the week. The game will be released on Aug. 20.
