Enes Kanter takes Kyrie Irving’s No. 11 and trolls him in the process: ‘I want to be the reason no one else will.’

Kyrie Irving once said in a Nike commercial, on his father and his jersey number for the Celtics: “He’s the reason I wear No. 11. And I want to be the reason no one else will.”
Well that’s immediately out the window. Free-agent center Enes Kanter is in the fold and he’s taking over No. 11 for Irving, who now-infamously bolted for Brooklyn this month.
And you can see in the video above, thanks to NBC Sports Boston, that Kanter couldn’t resist a little troll-jab when asked why he chose No. 11 for the C’s.
“Well, it was my old jersey number, by the way, No. 11,” said Kanter, who wore 11 with the Thunder for two seasons. “And, I want to be the reason that no one else will.”
Kanter smirked and chuckled as reporters realized what he was doing, and followed up with “I had to say it.”
A pretty hilarious little slice of shade for Irving. Unfortunately, it doesn’t undo the disappointment of the past calendar year. But Kanter’s trolling does expose Irving’s original comment from the commercial, which at best turned out to be an unfulfilled promise.
At worst, it was an empty promise. One worthy of some mockery, now that Irving clearly wasn’t as serious about building a long-term legacy with the Celtics as he claimed.
