How long until Jerod Mayo loses locker room? – Toucher & Hardy
On Monday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Mike Dussault analyzed the New England Patriots’ tough 32-16 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jerod Mayo: ‘Soft’ Team
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: Are you concerned at all about Jerod Mayo losing the locker room? It’s easy to lose a locker room in the NFL, we know this. Are you concerned about Mayo’s ability to keep things together this season?
Mike Dussault: I agree with you, Fred. I mean, the Jaguars ran the ball 18 straight times against the Patriots at one point. Everyone knew they were going to run the ball, but they didn’t care. And I mean how many times was there just so much space inside? The Jags were dominating the line of scrimmage, they were winning.
I think you could see the frustration on Mayo’s face. There was just nothing they could do to stop it.
Jacksonville wasn’t doing anything fancy. They were not doing any big scheme. They were just lining up and pushing the Patriots back. That’s a huge concern.
You heard Mayo say it last night, “We’re a soft team.” I do think that’s the core of it. It sounds cliche, but if you can’t stop the run then you can’t get off the field. You can’t give your quarterback more chances to make more plays.
That is a little bit frustrating. You have something with Drake Maye, and he’s not able to get on the field to make a comeback. But at least some of Maye’s explosive plays make you feel better about some of these games.
If the defense can’t get off the field, Maye won’t even get the chance at more reps to develop. The run defense has got to be the first thing they figure out. It needs to be fixed. They don’t have anyone to turn to, either. They’re already spinning the dial with the personnel.
Toucher: Bill Belichick should never get another job in the NFL. This roster is a disaster. You can’t say Belichick was magical and this is all Mayo’s fault. They didn’t do anything to improve the team. The team sucked last year too. Does this team’s performance hurt Belichick’s chance of getting a coaching job next year?
Dussault: I don’t think so. Some teams will get desperate and want to change their whole narrative. It’s just tough with both sides pointing the finger at each other about the personnel.
Look, there were a bunch of bad draft classes that got us to this point. Unfortunately, a lot of the moves that they made this offseason haven’t really paid off.
This past draft class, other than Drake Maye, is struggling. He’s banged up. I think it all goes together when you get to this point. After you lose 6 straight games, you can’t just point the finger at one guy.
They’ve missed some drafts and haven’t been able to stack the high-round talent. It seems like they’ve got a couple of those guys with Maye and Gonzalez, but it’s not enough, right now. They need more.
