Mike Reiss: The Biggest Issue With The Patriots is The Play on The Field
On Tuesday’s edition of Zolak and Bertrand, Mike Reiss who covers the Patriots for ESPN, joined the show. While reacting to the Patriots performance in the team’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals, along with Jerod Mayo’s comments postgame, Reiss brought up how the biggest issue that’s plaguing the organization is their play on the field.
“That’s Not Good Enough…”
Bertrand: Our big story this week, Mike. I don’t know if everybody in New England realizes how big this story has become, not just here but elsewhere. Jerod Mayo’s comments that you just heard talking about,” you said it, not me,” has been viewed as a real shot at the offensive operation of this team, and he did his best to walk it back again on Monday. Walk it back Monday with Jerod Mayo. How does he come back from this?
Mike Reiss: Two questions later in the room when I listen back to it, I actually feel like that issue to me is separate, and almost less significant than the bigger issue. Which is what we saw on the field, the performance of the team, which was well below the standard of what it should be for a team that has the Patriot logo on its helmet and uniform. So I actually think he can come back from what happened in the press conference. To me, the bigger focus is what everyone saw at 4:25 Eastern Time on Sunday. That’s not going to cut it. That’s not good enough. So that’s where I’m coming from.
Zolak: Coming off the bye week, I really gave them a shot in this game. I thought, that’s not a good football team. I know they’re on the brink of the playoffs, but they just they kind of controlled the whole game over you.
Mike Reiss: I was shocked, and I get it. Like it’s a talking point. I actually take Jerod Mayo at his word. Like, “I didn’t mean to throw him under the bus,” and that to me is common courtesy, human decency. To me, what do I ask for when I do that? I would hope someone comes to me and says, “Hey, Mike, when you said they’re going to be…”. Like, what do you mean by that? Then I would tell you what I meant, and you would determine if you believe me or if you think I’m trying to spin you out.
Bertrand: The only thing I would add, though, is this is a pretty obvious trend that has occurred with this head coach when it comes to saying things that he then needs to clarify or take back those things.
Mike Reiss: Fair.
