Reiss: Patriots win over Jets was franchise reassuring
On Monday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Mike Reiss reacted to the New England Patriots’ surprising 25-22 victory over the New York Jets.
Reiss: Big Win for Patriots
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: How big a win was this for Jerod Mayo and for the franchise? Look, they’re not making the playoffs, but as wins go, how important was this for the team?
Mike Reiss: Critical, Fred. I would use the words franchise reassuring.
To me, basically the only question entering the game was: How would the players respond to Jerod Mayo? I didn’t know which way it was going to go, and I’m down there every day. I think the way they responded was reassuring. This new regime has a chance now.
In saying that, we have to acknowledge the margins are so thin. We’re talking inches between a win and a loss at the end of the game. Whether they won or lost, the answer was still the same.
They showed up for the game, which was the question I wanted to know the answer to. And then I think the second part of all this is that the players needed the reward. It’s hard to keep coming back into the building each week when you lose six in a row. So, nice for them to get the reward even though the margin was that thin.
Toucher: They certainly didn’t look like a soft team yesterday. What were they doing differently that you haven’t seen in other weeks now? They dropped a lot of balls. There’s no question they dropped an interception. This isn’t any insult to the Patriots, but did it look like the Patriots went out and won this game? Or was this a game between two pretty bad teams and the Patriots did just enough to win?
Reiss: I think it’s the second thing. The Jets were complicit in their demise. I mean, they were awful.
