Perry: Jerod Mayo needs players to continue buying into program
On Thursday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Phil Perry describes the Jerod Mayo buy-in factor with New England Patriots players.
Jerod Mayo Player Buy In
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: Many are complimenting Jerod Mayo for having a very physical training camp. I’m curious about your opinion on this. For the Patriots, that’s awesome, have a physical camp, and come out of the gates hot. But for a team that wants a long playoff run, maybe that’s not the best modus operandi. You want something left in the tank as the season goes on.
Were the hard training camp practices the reason for the Patriot’s success in Week 1? Could the Judon trade also have a positive effect on the rest of the season?
Phil Perry: Yes, I believe it will. The Bengals have told us their plan based on how they handled their starters in preseason. Leave the guys with the contract situations out of it, however. Those guys just didn’t play very much, so they weren’t targeting Week 1.
The Bengals weren’t looking at Week 1 and saying, “We want to be at our best when we kick the ball off to start the 2024 season.” That just wasn’t how they approached it.
The Patriots, on the other hand, I think have to do that to try to steal as many wins as they can. I think it’s additionally important beyond just the winning and losing of it.
Jerod Mayo is a first-year head coach. And, to be able to have your team experience some level of success to me is critical to maintain the buy-in that you have. I think that they did have that buy-in during camp.
I know it’s a young team, but there are a lot of veterans on the roster that I talked to after camp that were glad they had a week in between the last week of the preseason and Week 1. Their bodies needed it cause that was a hard camp.
Guys like Jabrill Peppers, who has played in other places, said camp was tough. So that was a real thing, and it helped them in Week 1. But I think it helped them on the other side too, because the Bengals almost treated it oppositely.
