Fred Toucher reacts to Patriots’ brutal 34-0 loss to Saints: ‘Mac Jones might be the worst QB in the league right now’
During the opening segment of this morning’s Toucher & Rich, Fred and Jon Wallach discussed the New England Patriots‘ recent struggles and Mac Jones‘ performance, who Fred believes might be the worst quarterback in the NFL right now.
After a disappointing loss to the Cowboys in Week 4, the New England Patriots hoped to do better against the New Orleans Saints. Unfortunately, things went horribly wrong. The Patriots had a terrible game, losing 34-0 and dropping their 2023 season record to 1-4. Mac Jones had a rough start as the Saints intercepted him, leading to a touchdown and an early 7-0 lead for the Saints.

Despite their efforts to recover, the Patriots missed a field goal and fell further behind as the Saints scored more touchdowns. New England never seemed to get control of the game. In the third quarter, a fumble by Ty Montgomery gave the Saints an opportunity, resulting in another touchdown, widening the gap to 31-0.
Seeing that the game was slipping away, the Patriots benched Jones and put in Bailey Zappe. However, their offensive struggles continued, and the situation didn’t improve. In the end, the Patriots were shut out by the Saints and leaving them with a 1-4 record and at the bottom of the AFC East. Jones completed 12-of-22 passes for 110 yards and throwing two interceptions. This game marked the first time in Bill Belichick‘s coaching career, including his time with Cleveland, that he trailed by 30 points at home.

The guys also acknowledge that the team’s chances for a top draft pick were increasing due to their poor performance and debated whether it was necessary to surround Mac Jones with elite talent for him to succeed, citing his strong supporting cast at Alabama as evidence. They criticized the Patriots’ evaluation of talent and expressed doubts about some of their recent signings, particularly at the tight end position. Overall, they questioned whether Mac Jones was the right choice for the Patriots given their offensive approach.
