Cedric Maxwell: Anticipate Porzingis returns before Christmas
On Friday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Cedric Maxwell provided an update on Kristaps Porzingis’ injury status. Plus, he had some positive things to say about guard Payton Pritchard.
Kristaps Porzingis Update
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Jon Wallach: Is Payton Pritchard as good as we’ve seen him play the first four or five games? It just seems like he’s better this year than last year.
Cedric Maxwell: I mean, he’s a junkyard dog. I’ve talked to both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Both those guys said to me that Payton Pritchard is the first to challenge them to a 1-on-1 after practice. He’s a gym rat.
There was some video recently of Pritchard playing basketball with some kids out in the street. They were just shooting hoops. And it kind of reminds me of Willie Mays. Remember when he was back in the streets of Brooklyn someplace playing stickball with the kids?
It’s pretty cool to get a professional basketball player playing with you out in the street. He doesn’t know those kids from a can of paint but still makes time for them. That’s relatable to the people.
Hardy: I’m looking at that Indiana Pacers team and it’s no secret that they’re a good team. When you look at teams in the East that could threaten the Celtics, the Pacers might be second or third on that list. Even last year, I considered them a team the Celtics didn’t want to mess with. They’ve got this element in their team. They play this way where they get the most out of everybody on the roster. They play more consistently than the other teams the Celtics are automatically afraid of.
Maxwell: Well, the Pacers haven’t played well this year. I mean, they dropped a game against New York. They’ve had players hurt. And they caught the Celtics on the night when they played well. If the Celtics had brought their B-game, they would’ve won handily. But the Celtics were down to their C-game.
But there’s so much hope and bright prospects for this Celtics team. Because here’s the thing I’m watching. I’m looking at Kristaps Porzingis practice before these games. He is moving so well. And I would anticipate that he’ll be back before Christmas. For me, that would be big.
You could possibly see him back sometime in early December because he moves so well when I watch him practice.
