Christopher Price on risks of making Drake Maye Patriots’ backup QB
This morning on the Toucher & Hardy radio program, Christopher Price from the Boston Globe shared his insights from the Patriots’ OTAs. He talked about the decision not to play rookie quarterback Drake Maye right away and why it’s crucial not to make him the backup. Price pointed out the risks of this approach, comparing it to the New York Jets’ situation with Aaron Rodgers and Zach Wilson. He also discussed what this means for other quarterbacks on the roster, like Bailey Zappe and Joe Milton, and speculated on potential roster moves and their impact on the team’s quarterback depth chart for the 2024 season.

Fred Toucher: Alright, Christopher, but if you’re the Patriots and you’re not gonna play Drake Maye and you’re making the decision not to play Drake Maye, it’s important not to make him the backup, right? Because I just saw what happened in New York. They were all confident. We have Aaron Rodgers, Zach Wilson’s talented. We’re gonna let him sit behind the master for a year or two. Four plays into the season, Rodgers gets hurt. Here comes Wilson. He’s ruined all over again. Is that a concern with you? With me? I mean, if you’re not gonna play him, you really can’t make him your third quarterback.
Christopher Price: Yeah, I think that’s an interesting argument, Fred. I do. I think that there’s value in just, you know, seeing what he can do at least with the first team, if that’s what you’re talking about. Because you do have to prepare for the worst-case scenario. Yeah.
Fred Toucher: I mean game day Sundays. Yeah, practice. I don’t practice. Yeah, sure. Yeah. Obviously, I want as much experience in practice as possible. But if my intention is not to play him on game days, I really gotta make that commitment that there’s gotta be a guy between him and the starter, right? Because if he starts, he’s gonna get hurt most likely at some point.
Christopher Price: Yeah. And then that also brings up a discussion regarding the other two guys on the roster and their future, at least as it relates to 2024.
Christopher Price: You want to keep Zappe around. I think there are two different possibilities there. When it comes to those guys, what they do, the first two guys, Maye and Brissett, will ultimately impact those two guys. Do you think about trading Zappe if he has a really good summer for, let’s say, a fifth-round pick or a sixth-round pick and you go into the regular season, you feel good about your combination of Maye, Brissett, and Joe Milton? Or does Joe Milton get the Foxboro flu and is a developmental guy for a year and you have to kind of send him away? I would think you would still have Bailey Zappe on the roster, so there’s a lot to be determined with that position right now. The thing that we know for sure is that Brissett is the number one quarterback on the roster.
