Jacoby Brissett wants to mentor ‘more than just’ Drake Maye
Many expected Jacoby Brissett to play the role of Drake Maye’s veteran mentor with the Patriots in 2024. However, Brissett sees his role running deeper than that.
When the New England Patriots signed quarterback Jacoby Brissett in free agency back in the spring, just about everybody had the same take – Brissett would serve as the veteran ‘mentor’ to whatever quarterback the Patriots drafted third overall. That of course ended up being Drake Maye.
It’s a role Brissett isn’t unfamiliar with. He’s been a veteran ‘bridge’ quarterback alongside a recent high draft pick at his last few stops. Most recently he worked alongside another UNC quarterback – Sam Howell in Washington in 2023.

Speaking to Patriots media on Thursday, Brissett was asked about his role alongside Maye. When it comes to being a mentor, it sounds like Brissett sees it as more than just a one-on-one relationship.
“When I was here [with the Patriots] the first time, you realize like, everybody’s your mentor that’s older than you in this in this league or has more experience,” Brissett explained, recalling how he learned from players beyond starting quarterback Tom Brady, like Devin McCourty and Martellus Bennett as well as fellow quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. “I hope I’m that for more than just Drake, and be a helping person for players on his team. When people ask that to other guys, I don’t understand the bad part. I mean, I’m a teammate first. I hope I can be a good teammate to not only him, but to everybody on this team.”
Brissett taking an interest in players beyond the quarterback room can only be a good thing for the Patriots. He’s one of only six 30-year-olds on the roster, and one of two on offense, along with center David Andrews. His nine years of NFL experience are also tied for second on the team.
Just because Brissett wants to work with the roster as a whole doesn’t mean he hasn’t been able to help Maye. On Thursday, he shared the two already communicate frequently.
“I’m excited to work with him. I remember when I was following Tom [Brady] around anywhere I could learn.” Brissett recalled, comparing himself then to Maye now. “[Maye] is already texting me about plays and how I think about things and cadence – all the little nuances of being in this position at this level.”
“He’s got a lot of talent,” Brissett added. “He wants to learn football. He wants to get better. That’s what you want in not only your quarterback, but anybody on the team.”
As the two continue to work together, the looming question is who will end up the Patriots’ starting quarterback Week 1. Whatever ends up happening it sounds like Brissett is committed to working with not just Maye, but the other young players on offense as well.
