Should Patriots fans read into Troy Brown’s outfit at the Senior Bowl?
During this morning on Toucher & Hardy, Chad Graff from theAthletic.com brought up an interesting point about Troy Brown‘s outfit at the Senior Bowl. Unlike others, Brown wasn’t rocking a Patriots shirt but went for a tight-fitted Senior Bowl one. This sparked some speculation about what it could mean for his future with the team. Graff hinted at uncertainty and even suggested there’s a chance Brown might not be making a comeback to the Patriots, despite his solid contributions over the last four years.

Fred Toucher: You mentioned Troy Brown. Quite interesting. He’s been on the coaching staff for the Patriots here for the last couple of years. What’s your read? Did you talk to him? What’s the deal with him?
Chad Graff: So, it’s this awesome new stadium where all the practices are held. Right as practice ends, this horn sounds and it comes over the speakerphone. “Hey, the media is walking on the field.” So usually, the coaches and players will kind of hang out a little bit, like, “Oh, who’s going to come talk to me? This is exciting,” especially the smaller school guys like New Hampshire’s Dylan Welby. Conversely, you can be at the front of the line, like when we were trying to get down onto the field to talk to Troy Brown. We wanted to say, “Hey, Troy, what’s going on? How are you? Any plans for next year?” And he was routinely one of the first off the field, so we never got a chance to talk to him.
But very noteworthy that at this Senior Bowl, it’s coached by NFL position coaches and coordinators. So there are a lot of different people there, everybody repping their team. They want it known like, “Hey, I’m the Chicago Bears defensive line coach. Come talk to me. Let me help try to woo you. Do you want us to draft you and make a good impression at the combine in a couple of months?” Troy Brown, on the other hand, was not wearing a Patriots shirt. He was the only one in a tight-fitted Senior Bowl shirt, with his stature popping. But that, you know, is an interesting sign to me.
I think that Jerod Mayo, my read on it was that he’s probably going to give Alex Van Pelt, the new offensive coordinator, carte blanche to hire what he wants. “This is your staff, man. I’m coming in and turning over the offense to you. I’m going to be more of a general manager, maybe a defensive head coach. So I want to give you a chance to hire who you like and interview Troy Brown if you’d like. Don’t interview him if you don’t want to. But it definitely does not seem like a set thing that Troy Brown is going to be back in. If anything, I’d venture a guess that he probably won’t be, despite everything he did as a player and his last four years as a coach.”
