The Red Sox search for a middle infielder continues

The Red Sox haven’t been very active in free agency so far, but it’s not for a lack of trying. After missing out on Corey Kluber last week, the team was once again spurred at another position of need on Thursday.
According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the Red Sox “tried hard” to land Jurickson Profar before he agreed to a three-year, $21 million deal with the San Diego Padres. Profar fits the mold of utility infielders the Red Sox have been linked to all winter, some of who are still available.
Back in December, it was reported that the Red Sox had “strong interest” in infielder Kiké Hernandez. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, The Red Sox negotiations with Hernandez “may be heating up” as Spring Training gets closer.

Cotillo also names former Astros and Twins utility player Marwin Gonzalez as a fit. In his last full season, the 31-year-old hit .264 while playing six different positions for Minnesota.
Another potential target is Marcus Semien, who has been linked to the Red Sox since Christmas. The 30-year-old has been primarily a shortstop over the last few years, but played second base early in his career and would provide the Red Sox with a solid bridge to prospect Jeter Downs.
Other current free agents who fit the mold the Red Sox are currently looking for include Brad Miller, Jonathan Villar, and Brock Holt.
