Red Sox reportedly adding even more veteran pitching help
One reunion was not enough for the Red Sox this summer, it turns out.
Still in need of some additional pitching help, the Red Sox have reportedly found out with the expected signing of Rich Hill to a minor-league contract, according to WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford. If and when signed by the club, this will be Hill’s eighth time signing a contract with the Red Sox in his career.
At 44 years old, Hill had always planned to take the first half of the MLB season off and then assess his options at the midway point. Recent reports had linked Hill to the Dodgers and Yankees, but the Milton, Mass. native will apparently join on with a Red Sox team fighting for its life in the wild card race.
Hill’s interest in Boston and vice versa comes on the heels of deadline addition James Paxton suffering a serious injury in an Aug. 11 start against the Astros, with Paxton’s injury later revealed to be a partially torn calf. Paxton has hopes of returning at some point before the end of the 2024 season, but given his ridiculously unfortunate injury history, hitching your wagon to that hope is not for the faint of heart.
A veteran of 19 MLB seasons, Hill is coming off a 2023 campaign split between Pittsburgh and San Diego, with an 8-14 record and 5.41 ERA in 146.1 innings of work.
Hill last played for the Red Sox during the 2022 season, with an 8-7 record, 109 strikeouts, and a 4.27 ERA in 124.1 innings over 26 starts with the club.
