Red Sox add pitcher in trade with Pirates
The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Joe Vogatsky from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for utility player Enmanuel Valdez.
The Boston Red Sox added a pitcher to their minor league system on Sunday morning in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Righty Joe Vogatsky will be coming to the Red Sox, with Boston sending utility player Enmanuel Valdez back to Pittsburgh.
Vogatsky, who turns 23 later this month, was drafted by the Pirates in the 19th round out of James Madison back in July. This past year for the Dukes he appeared in 27 games out of the bullpen posting a 3.49 ERA in 49 innings with nine saves. He didn’t pitch in the minors for the Pirates this summer.
The Red Sox are sending back Valdez, who appeared in 125 games over the last two years as a utility player after being acquired in the Christian Vazquez trade deadline deal with the Houston Astros in 2022. He slashed .235/286/.400 over those games, with 12 home runs and 47 runs driven in.

Last year Valdez hit .214 while spending time at second base, third base, and left field. Valdez had played shortstop in the past as well.
Valdez, 25, was DFA’ed by the Red Sox earlier this week. That move was made to open up a spot for catcher Carlos Navarez, who was acquired via trade from the New York Yankees.
