Red Sox rookie outfielder wins Gold Glove award
Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu was named a 2024 Gold Glove winner on Sunday night.
On Sunday night Major League Baseball announced the Gold Glove winners for the 2024 season. That includes one representative from the Boston Red Sox.
That representative is Wilyer Abreu, who won the right field gold glove for the American League. He beat out Juan Soto of the Yankees and Jo Adell of the Angels at the position.
Abreu, 25, started 106 games in right field for the Red Sox this season. He led all right fielders with 18 defensive runs saved this season, and had nine outfield assists. At the plate, he hit .253 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs.
With this win, Abreu becomes the first Red Sox player to win a Gold Glove since Mookie Betts in 2019 (that was also in right field). He’s also the first Red Sox rookie to win a Gold Glove since Fred Lynn in 1975.
The Red Sox had one other Gold Glove finalist, with Jarren Duran in center field. That award ended up going to Dalton Varsho of the Blue Jays.
There was also one former Red Sox player who came away with a Gold Glove. Chris Sale won the pitcher Gold Glove in the National League.
