Breer: If Drake Maye was hurt, he wouldn’t have flown to London
On Friday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Albert Breer joined the show to give the latest injury update on New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.
Breer: Drake Maye is FINE
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: Is Drake may be injured?
Albert Breer: I think he’s fine. These sorts of things can happen. He got knocked around some on Sunday. Then they go into practice on Wednesday and obviously, there must’ve been some sort of soreness. They check everything. It’s an easy thing to do.
Again it does show up in the injury report, so it is notable. But look, you’re not going to push a guy out there in a bad circumstance. He’s that important to the franchise. If he was really hurt he wouldn’t be participating in a Wednesday or Thursday practice. Especially if there’s something structurally wrong with his knee.
But do they have to check it out? Sure. It’s a precaution that you should take in a situation like this. But I don’t see where they would be pushing them out into practice. They wouldn’t be traveling him to London if this was anything serious. So, I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.
Hardy: Yeah, and we were talking about it yesterday, but we don’t know if this injury even occurred in a game. It could have happened at practice. Anything can happen.
Andrew Callahan was talking to us about how players can get dinged up in the middle of a practice. And then technically, you weren’t limited because of something that happened during the practice.
Breer: That’s the other thing too. They must be very careful about how they handle all of the injury report stuff. Practices are under surveillance from the league, and we’ve seen teams get in trouble. Especially now, with the heightened awareness due to all the gambling crap. They must report everything that goes on out there.
Hardy: So, would Jacoby Brissett be going back in should something happen to Drake Maye at this point?
Breer: It would be weird if they had to pull Maye out for some reason. They didn’t start Drake just to get a look at the kid. That was part of it, yes, but also, Jacoby Brissett wasn’t good enough.
Hardy: We’re not talking about a season-derailing injury here, are we?
Breer: Well, the season was never on the rails.
Hardy: I guess it would just add to an already strange dynamic.
Toucher: Especially, when Joey Milton inevitably comes in and starts taking over.
