The Patriots are reportedly adding a kicker to their practice squad
The New England Patriots are reportedly signing kicker John Parker Romo to their practice squad. Will he be competition for Joey Slye?
As the New England Patriots come out of their bye week for a four-game stretch to close the season, they’re still adding to the roster. On Tuesday morning, the team made a move on special teams.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Patriots are expected to sign kicker John Parker Romo to their practice squad. Romo, 27, was most recently with the Minnesota Vikings but was released over the weekend when starting kicker Will Reichard returned from IR.
During his four games filling in with the Vikings Romo hit 11 of his 12 field goal attempts. That included going 5-of-6 from 40-plus yards.
Although his year was the first time he’s appeared in an NFL regular season game Romo has been in the league since going undrafted out of Virginia Tech in 2022. He spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions, and Chicago Bears before joining the Vikings. Additionally Romo got a year of experience as the kicker for the San Antonio Brahmas of the XFL in 2023.
Now in New England, Romo will create competition for starting kicker Joey Slye. Slye had a strong start to the season after beating out Chad Ryland for the job in training camp, but has missed three of his six kicks over the last two weeks including a 25 yarder last week.
In order to officially get Romo on the practice squad the Patriots will need to open up a spot. No corresponding move was initially reported.
