Bertrand: Drake Maye Has Not Popped Yet in Training Camp
On Tuesday’s edition of Zolak and Bertrand, Beetle makes the point that rookie quarterback Drake Maye has yet to put up a good performance in training camp. This follows the reporting that Maye had a poor day in the team’s first practice in pads.
That Hasn’t Materialized…
Bertrand: I want to see Drake Maye pop. I want to see Drake Maye do something out there that makes you say, “that’s why you drafted him third overall. That is the future. He’s really challenging Jacoby Brissett.” That hasn’t materialized. I haven’t seen that happen yet. Zo, you’re better equipped to talk about this than we are because you’ve been there in this spot as a quarterback in training camp. Why haven’t we seen that yet?
Zolak: I said it yesterday, that was, “Separation Monday,” for me. For Jacoby Brissett to really have himself a day, and to put his stamp on that number one quarterback position. It’s too up and down for Maye right now. I’m seeing multiple sacks within the play action game, multiple sacks within the backup game. They’re not hitting, I get all that. But the way I’m watching the play condense, that’s a sack to me if you’re holding onto the ball too long. That’s a sack to me. He’s three of 11, with two picks. Not good in team drills. You got to be good on team sessions. When Brady came out, the ball didn’t hit the ground. You have to be perfect, it’s the NFL now. You know where you’re going with the ball in training camp. These drills are for you, and I want to see him have a little more leadership here. My brother in law was here from Chicago. They’re Bears fans. They watch the bears train. He came here to camp for two days. First thing he said to me, “He’s not the guy”. After watching Caleb Williams he goes,” I don’t like Caleb Williams, but he’s head and shoulders above this guy.”
