Danny Jansen set for Red Sox debut after series of roster moves
Danny Jansen will bat seventh as the designated hitter when he makes his Red Sox debut Sunday night.
Just one day after he was acquired by the Boston Red Sox via trade, Danny Jansen will make his debut with the team on Sunday night. Jansen will bat seventh as the designated hitter for the series finale against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park.
With lefty Carlos Rodon starting for the Yankees on Sunday night, Jansen gives the Red Sox a platoon option for regular DH and left-handed Masataka Yoshida. Yoshida is hitting .167 against lefties this year, while Jansen is hitting Jansen is 0-for-2 with a strike out in his career against Rodon.
Jansen was one of two trade acquisitions activated by the Red Sox on Sunday, along with pitcher James Paxton. In their announcement of the moves, the Sox also shared that Jansen will wear No. 28 and Paxton will wear No. 65.
Jansen and Paxton weren’t the only players added to the Red Sox roster on Sunday. The team also announced it claimed righty reliever Yohan Ramirez off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Sox will be the fourth team Ramirez, 29, plays for this year after the Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, and New York Mets. In 37 total relief appearances this year Ramirez has a 5.98 ERA in 43.2 innings.
In order to open up roster spots to make those moves, the Red Sox DFAed reliever Chase Anderson and catcher Reese McGuire (they also previously DFAed pitcher Alex Speas to open up a spot for Jansen on the 40-man roster). With McGuire off the roster the Red Sox will have both of their catchers in the lineup Sunday night in Jansen and Connor Wong (batting third).
The Red Sox and Yankees meet for their rubber match at 7:10 p.m. ET on Sunday night. Tanner Houck will get the ball for the Sox opposite Rodon. The Red Sox enter Sunday one game out of the final Wild Card spot, and 4.5 games behind the Yankees for the top Wild Card spot.
