Red Sox add catcher in latest deadline move
On Saturday afternoon, the Red Sox acquired catcher Danny Jansen from the Blue Jays in their second move of the trade deadline.
Craig Breslow and the Boston Red Sox remain busy ahead of the 2024 MLB trade deadline. On Saturday they made their second move, this time adding a needed right-handed bat.
As first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Red Sox have acquired catcher Danny Jansen from the Toronto Blue Jays in a rare in-division trade in the AL East.
The return from the Red Sox wasn’t immediately reported. According to Passan, at least one player going back to Toronto is 2022 second-round pick infielder Cutter Coffey. SoxProspects.com had Coffey as the 28th ranked player in the Red Sox system.
UPDATE: The Red Sox also traded away two more prospects, infielder Eddinson Paulino and pitcher Gilberto Batista. To make room for Jansen on the 40-man roster, the team DFAed pitcher Alex Speas.

Jansen, 29, comes to the Red Sox slashing .212/.303/.369 in 61 games this season with 13 doubles and six home runs. However he’s been struggling as of late, hitting .134 since the start of June.
For now, this is a rental move for the Red Sox. Jansen is a pending free agent, having signed a one-year, $5.2 million contract with Toronto this past offseason.
It’s not immediately clear how manager Alex Cora will use Jansen. Reece McGuire has been the backup for Connor Wong so far this season. Whatever they do though, Jansen’s right-handed bat is a needed presence for a lefty-heavy team.
This is the second trade the Red Sox have made in as many days. On Friday, they acquired starting pitcher James Paxton from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
This is a developing story, and will be updated…
