Mazz: It’s slipping out of the Red Sox hands
The Boston Red Sox have opened up the second half of their 2024 season with a four game losing streak and have seen their playoff chances take a hit. With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, Mazz talked about how the playoffs and the idea of the Red Sox being buyers at the deadline is starting to slip away.
Mazz: Whenever the Red Sox want to act, feel free! Like you don’t have to wait until July 31st to add. You can add now, you know! Especially if you knew your closer was going to be out of Colorado. Like, you couldn’t make a deal a week ahead of time? You couldn’t preempt that one and get another arm in the bullpen for the series against the Rockies? Just get an extra body in there for the series that you weren’t going to have Jansen when you knew he wasn’t going to pitch there?
Felger: Your other thoughts?
Mazz: So look, it’s slipping. It’s slipping out of their hands. This is the part I’m worried about. That front office and ownership is waiting for an opportunity to say, “well, you know, don’t look at us. We were ready to do it. I mean, we came out and said we were ready to add, but things have slid so much here in the last week that we can’t now extend ourselves the way we were going to and do it in good conscience. We can’t do it.” They’re looking for an excuse to back out. They’re looking for an excuse.
Jim Murray: Which is why they’ve probably loved this sweep by the Dodgers and this loss last night?
Mazz: Don’t give them an excuse. You can’t give them one. So the idea that, “well they’re trying hard” is preposterous. I’m so with you on that. It is absolutely preposterous. You have got to win these games. You have go to beat the Rockies. The Rockies suck.
