During this morning’s show, Mike Reiss from ESPN broke down Bailey Zappe’s promising first half performance in the Patriots‘ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. According to Reiss, Zappe had a strong first half, displaying poise and avoiding mistakes.
“Absolutely. He was hot.” said Reiss, “I’m looking at the stats now. Look at halftime. He was 17 of 19 for 141 yards with the touchdown. I thought he was playing poised and was avoiding the mistake to keep the team in the game. So to me, they were in a pretty good position at halftime down 14-10.”

However, he pointed out that Zappe’s performance tends to decline in the second half, citing the quarterback’s lack of experience in the NFL. Reiss highlighted the impact of Zappe’s interception and subsequent Chiefs touchdown, seeing it as a learning curve for young quarterbacks.
When asked about Zappe’s future with the Patriots, Reiss expressed confidence that he would be with the team during the offseason, considering his affordable rookie contract. However, he suggested that Zappe might not be the primary quarterback option but could still provide value as a backup or depth player. The overall tone of the conversation reflected the uncertainty surrounding the Patriots’ quarterback situation and the need for options in the upcoming season.
“I think he’ll be here for the offseason program. He’s under contract. It’s said a cheap number on a rookie deal as he sort of referenced last week and why he didn’t have anyone at the Pittsburgh game because he’s still on a rookie contract. So I think he’ll be here. I think the whole conversation is a good one because if you don’t have the quarterback position accounted for, you put your whole team at risk and I would think they’ll have three or four quarterbacks here and there’s no reason that he wouldn’t be one of them. I think the context to me would be I don’t think he would be one that they’d be relying on to be the number one guy, you know, as a backup or a depth guy. I think he’s shown he has some value to the team.”

Patriots Ups and Downs: Who stood out in a loss to the Chiefs?
The New England Patriots fell to 3-11 on the season after a 27-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at Gillette Stadium. Here are 10 players graded either UP or DOWN based on their overall performance…
DOWN: QB Bailey Zappe

It was a tale of two halves for Zappe, and by extension, the Patriots offense. Zappe finished 23-of-31 for 180 yards, one touchdown, and one interception through the air. He did have a potential second touchdown called back due to a penalty, and the Patriots had to settle for a field goal on that drive, but the Chiefs essentially took over the game from there.
Zappe credited the Chiefs for improved pressure in the second half, which helped contribute to spotty decision-making. His worst mistake, which came on the Pats’ first play of the third quarter with a chance to drive for a tying touchdown, was a back-breaker. Zappe escaped pressure, but then tried to force a pass into tight coverage, and the Chiefs’ Willie Gay Willie Gay comes up with the @Chiefs INT

He admitted after the game that he should have thrown the ball away on the play. That was a learning experience for Zappe on living to see another down in that situation.

“Just not good enough,” Zappe said after the game. “There’s things I’m going to clean up going into next week, then get ready for the Broncos.”
Zappe did come out hot in the first half, completing 17 of his first 19 passes, including his touchdown pass to Hunter Henry. But after the Pats went up 10-7, Zappe was just 6-of-12 with the interception the rest of the way.
The second-year pro will certainly want to play a more consistently strong 60 minutes every week, but it was especially important against the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes. Zappe certainly made a few nice plays, most notably The 4 to 85 connection is back.@baileyzappe04 | @Hunter_Henry84
