Fred Toucher asks Mike Reiss from ESPN if the Patriots locker room is rallying around Bailey Zappe. Fred pointed out that the team appears to be more energized and happy when Zappe is playing, especially noting moments like David Andrews interacting with Zappe after a big play. Mike Reiss responds by suggesting that the team’s positive response is likely more tied to Zappe’s on-field performance than any specific personality or rallying effect. Reiss points out that Zappe was performing well during the mentioned instances, generating excitement and confidence among teammates through his effective play, rather than any perceived team dynamic or preference for Zappe over Mac Jones.

Fred Toucher: It just seemed to me, watching the game, you know, I wasn’t there. My son was off. That counts for anything. But the team just seems to like that a lot more. Am I reading too much into that? Is the team rallying around Bailey Zappe?
Mike Reiss: I don’t know. I don’t know if I would say that.
Fred Toucher: They seemed to be like? Do you know what I’m saying? Like when David Andrews was up in his face. They seemed to be just happy a lot more than Jones is what I’m saying. It’s just that just seems to be the case to me.
Mike Reiss: Well, I think what they like to me, I would focus more on the performance like Zappe. When you talk about David Andrews going up to Zappe like he was he was on fire at that point. Like even the touchdown that was called back from the offensive holding that was a great throw to Hunter Henry. So I think what you’re seeing is they’re responding to positive performance. You know, at that point that was pretty consistent over two quarters. So I think to myself, and Mac even said this, like I think you generate and spark confidence among your teammates through good play. And I think it’s more about that than any personality thing. And so yeah I think it’s more about that. Bailey was balling at the time you saw that reaction more than anything else.”

A tale of two halves: 9 takeaways from the Patriots' loss to the Chiefs
For a second there, it looked like the New England Patriots were about to pull off the upset of the year, and really pick up some momentum to close their otherwise-disappointing 2023 season on a high note. Late in the second half they had a 10-7 lead on the Kansas City Chiefs, but things quickly turned form there.
Kansas City executed a textbook two-minute drill, taking a 14-10 lead at halftime. That touchdown was the first of four consecutive scoring drives for the Chiefs, who put up 20 unanswered points on their way to a 27-17 win on Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

It was the second week in a row the Patriots struggled in the second half. Last week against the Steelers they were blanked after the break, but still managed to hold on for the win. Against a much more explosive Chiefs team this week, that wasn’t the case as the second half has suddenly become the latest boogeyman for a team that has been haunted by a number of issues throughout the season.
Between all of that, it really was a game of ‘the good, the bad, and the ugly’ for the Patriots. Let’s go through it all in this week’s takeaways…
