Red Sox place Kiké Hernandez on 10-day IL
Kiké Hernandez was unable to finish Thursday’s Red Sox game, after injuring himself on a slide on a first-inning double. That injury will cause him to miss time, with The #RedSox today placed INF/OF Kiké Hernández on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain.
To fill Hernández’s spot on the active roster, the club recalled INF/OF Michael Chavis from Triple-A Worcester.
Hernandez has picked it up as of late after a slow start in the leadoff spot for the Red Sox. So far this season, he’s hit .232 with four home runs and 10 RBIs.
In an ensuing move, Michael Chavis was called up and will take Hernandez’s spot on the roster. This is Chavis’ second call-up of the season – he’s played just one game in 2021, in which he scored as a pinch runner in extra innings. He hit .212 in 42 games for the Red Sox last season.
Without Hernandez in the lineup playing center field, the recently-benched Franchy Cordero could see himself inserted back in the lineup. For Friday night’s game against Baltimore, Cordero will start in left field, with Alex Verdugo moving over to center. Marwin Gonzalez takes over as the leadoff hitter.
