Reiss: Patriots fans deserve better after embarrassing loss
On Monday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Mike Reiss reacted to the New England Patriots’ horrific 34-15 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
Reiss: Patriots ‘Inexcusable’ Performance
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Fred Toucher: Okay, so Mike, the Patriots are very, very, very conservative. Did you think they should’ve done certain things differently yesterday? Should they have been a little more aggressive?
Mike Reiss: Well, Fred—first of all—I would say everything’s fair game this morning. The team played like that and I think the fans deserve better. All the criticism is warranted.
I think there are some games where you lose because the other team outperforms you. And then there are other games where you self-destruct. So obviously, they didn’t even give themselves a chance. Should they be more or less aggressive? It’s more about fundamentals to me.
Like, line up correctly! And don’t false start. Line up correctly behind the ball. Don’t jump into the neutral zone on defense. These are very elementary things and they couldn’t execute them. So, they had no business winning the game. As Davon Godchaux said in the locker room after the game, “embarrassing.”
Jon Wallach: You’ve been following the Patriots for a very long time. You’ve seen bad teams over the years. Have you ever seen an offensive lineman commit five penalties in one half? And have you ever seen a wide receiver commit two offensive pass interference penalties in the same game?
Reiss: I probably should have looked back on that. I can’t recall it. I think something stood out about these penalties, though. Sometimes you get too many holding penalties because the referees are calling it tight and you might say, “Is that a hold?”
But three false starts? I mean, we’ve seen it in some other games around the league where officials have a point of emphasis on these types of calls. The referees are trying to nip certain penalties in the bud.
However, this was not that. I mean, this was just a lack of focus and attention to detail. Very rare and inexcusable.
