Bill O’Brien describes working with GOAT Tom Brady
On Thursday’s Zolak & Bertrand radio program, Boston College head football coach Bill O’Brien joined the show.
Bill O’Brien Talks Tom Brady
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Bill O’Brien: You know, in 2010, in New England, you guys probably remember we went to a no-huddle offense. We were pretty good. You know we were good on offense. And it took us a while to sell it to Tom [Brady]. But Tom finally bought into it, and he was good at it. So you could give him a couple of play calls and go fast at the line of scrimmage and not let the defense sub or get lined up.
And so we were in the Green Bay game, and I made a play call. He didn’t like it. You know they were blitzing off one edge. We call it a run into the blitz. So he changed it. And he had to change the play. Change the protection. Change the formation. Change the mike point. Change the cadence.
There was about 6 or 7 things he had to do. And then he delivered a dart slant pass to [Aaron] Hernandez for a touchdown from about the 15-yard line on a Sunday night game in Green Bay.
And that was like a play that always stood out to me because he multitasks. He’s just an incredible multi-tasker on that play. And you know, that’s what you have to do in that league. I believe that. I wholeheartedly believe that. You have to have an idea because the play clock is running down, too.
Zolak: It was about 17 seconds that he did that in that in, too.
Bill O’Brien: So, yeah, that’s definitely a play that always stood out to me. When you’re thinking about playing quarterback in the NFL.
Bertrand: Did you think to yourself at that point I’ll never coach someone as good as him ever again?
Bill O’Brien: Yeah, I mean, I said this to a lot of people; I always talk about this. We’re all very fortunate to be a part of the Patriots and work for Bill and Coach Tom. You know, be around guys like Dante Scarnecchia, Ivan Fears, and all the great players. I mean one of my closest friends is Mike Vrabel. I wouldn’t know Mike unless I was at the Patriots.
I’m very grateful to the New England Patriots for what they’ve meant to my life and my career.
