Patriots lose versatile defensive back in free agency

Most of the New England Patriots’ internal free agents were re-signed or signed by another team through the first week of free agency. Entering Monday, only six players (not including Kyle Dugger, who was given the transition tag), remained without a contract.
Monday afternoon, that number dropped to five. According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Houston Texas are signing defensive back Myles Bryant. The financial terms of the deal were not immediately reported.

Bryant, 26, was signed by the Patriots as a UDFA out of Washington in 2020. He played sparingly in nine games his rookie year but took on a more regular role after that, making 17 starts in 46 games over the next three seasons.
In 55 career games with the Patriots, Bryant recorded four interceptions and 17 pass breakups. He also had 200 tackles, with nine for a loss and two sacks, in addition to three forced fumbles.
Initially, Bryant was used mostly as a slot cornerback for the Patriots. After a run of injuries last year though he started playing more as a rover, recording career-high snaps at box safety, free safety, and boundary cornerback while still playing most of his snaps in the slot.

Moving forwards, the Patriots will likely turn to third-year cornerback Marcus Jones to take on a bigger slot role. Jones had a promising rookie season before missing most of 2023 with a shoulder injury. Jonathan Jones could also move back to the slot after playing mostly on the boundary the last two years – although the Patriots would need to add another starting boundary cornerback to play opposite Christian Gonzalez.
In terms of depth at slot corner, this could mean more chances for Shaun Wade, who has played sparingly in three seasons in New England. Adding more slot cornerback depth in free agency or later in the draft could make sense.
With Bryant gone, the Patriots’ five remaining pending free agents are running back Ezekiel Elliott, wide receiver Tre Nixon, tackle Riley Reiff, linebacker Terez Hall, and safety/special teamer Cody Davis.

Barth's Patriots Mock Draft 2.0: Getting aggressive

When we did our first Patriots Mock Draft of the offseason back in February, there was still a lot we didn’t know. The Patriots were still in the process of filling out their new coaching staff, the team hadn’t definitively named a head of personnel, and the pre-draft process was just beginning.
Fast forward over a month, and a lot has happened. With Eilot Wolf leading the way the Patriots have assembled a full coaching staff. Meanwhile all the prospects have been through the NFL Combine and most have had their pro days.

There was also NFL free agency, which certainly changes the landscape. In our initial mock draft we had to project some moves for the Patriots (namely signing a big-name wide receiver), most of which did not happen. Instead, the Patriots mostly retained players in free agency, making only minor targeted additions.
That strategy points to one thing – the Patriots are all in on the draft. Wolf’s Packer Way plan of ‘draft and develop’ won’t get an initial boost from free agency. Rather, the goal appears to be trying to find multiple core foundational players in this draft.
With the third overall pick at their disposal, the Patriots are in position to add at least one such player. But could they get aggressive and improve their chances at adding a second? We’ll look into that and more as we get into Patriots Mock Draft 2.0…
