Patriots meet with two Texas draft prospects who would help ‘weaponize’ the offense
Few schools are sending more talent to this year’s NFL Draft than Texas. The Longhorns are projected to have as many as 10 players get drafted this year, including six in the top 100.
Most of the Texas draft prospects are on the offensive side of the ball, from an explosive unit that ranked 15th in the nation last year scoring 35.8 points per game. For a New England Patriots team trying to “weaponize the offense” in the first year under de facto general manager Eliot Wolf and head coach Jerod Mayo, there are multiple Longhorns that would make sense as draft picks.

Texas held its pro day on Wednesday of this week, but the Patriots began their work in Austin before that. According to NFL Draft insider Tony Pauline, the Patriots met with two of Texas’ most explosive offensive players in the days leading up to the pro day.
Pauline reports that on Monday afternoon, the Patriots spent time with wide receiver Xavier Worthy. Worthy, who ran the fastest 40-yard dash in NFL Combine history at 4.21 seconds, is a speedy and shifty ‘Z’ receiver. Last year in 14 games he caught 75 passes for 1,014 yards and five touchdowns. He’s expected to go late in the first round or very early in the second. If the Patriots like him but feel they can’t get him at 34, they could attempt to move up late into the first round.
The Patriots weren’t alone in meeting with Worthy. Pauline added that other teams who spent time with Worthy include the Cowboys, Bears, Texans, Steelers, and Colts.
In addition to Worthy, the Patriots also met with tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders. A truly explosive and powerful athlete at 6-foot-4, 245 pounds, Worthy projects as a play-making tight end at the next level. In 14 games last year he caught 45 passes for 682 yards and two scores. Most expect him to be the second tight end off the board this year (after Georgia’s Brock Bowers), most likely as a second-round pick.

Not only were the Patriots not alone in meeting with Worthy, but they weren’t even the only AFC East team to do so. According to Pauline, Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier both “were on hand specifically for Sanders.” Sanders also met with the Colts and Texans.
Notably, there have been no reports of the Patriots meeting with the third of Texas’ ‘big three’ offensive draft prospects – wide receiver AD Mitchell. As a big, explosive, ‘X’ outside receiver, Mitchell arguably is the best fit of the three for what New England needs right now. He’s a projected top 40 pick, meaning he could go late in the first or early in the second – the same range as Worthy.
Whether that lack of a meeting means little interest or is a ‘smokescreen’ is up to interpretation. In recent years the Patriots have rarely drafted players they’ve been reported to have met with (just one in 2023 and two in 2022), but some will view the list of players the team has not met with to be as notable as the list of those they have.
Speaking of the list the players the Patriots have had reported pre-draft meetings with, you can check that out in full below…
2024 Patriots pre-draft meeting tracker
Throughout the pre-draft process, NFL teams meet with prospects sometimes on multiple occasions. These meets can occur at showcase games like the Senior Bowl and Shrine Bowl, the NFL Combine, can be organized officially (top-30 visits), or be arranged in a number of other ways.
While these meetings aren’t always a perfect indication of who a team will draft, they often provide a general guide of the kinds of players a team is considering drafting. Tracking meetings can also come to fruition later on when a draft class hits free agency.
Last year the Patriots only had an official pre-draft meeting with one of their draft picks (Christian Gonzalez) and signed another as a UDFA (Malik Cunningham). In 2022 they met with two draft picks (Jack Jones and Marcus Jones) and another UDFA (D’Eriq King). Make of that what you will – the more pessimistic fans can use meetings as a guide to players the Patriots won’t be drafting.
Who have the Patriots met with in 2024? Here’s a running list. Be sure to check back throughout the offseason as the list is updated.
