Jerod Mayo explains ‘enviable spot’ of Patriots’ third overall pick, elaborates on Drake Maye
Exactly one month out from the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots aren’t shutting any doors on their plans for the third overall pick. Speaking to the media at the NFL annual meeting on Monday morning, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo put all the options on the table.
“We sit at a very enviable spot at number three where we could take someone at three or if someone offers ‘a bag’ as we would say – a lot of first round picks – we definitely have to talk about those things as we continue to put together this team,” Mayo explained.

What might constitute ‘a bag’ for the Patriots, beyond ‘a lot of first round picks’? It depends where the team coming up is trading from. For reference, in 2018 the New York Jets gave up the sixth-overall pick, two second rounders that year, and a future second to move up to third. In 2021, the San Francisco 49ers moved up from 12th to third, adding in their next two future first-round picks, and a future third-round pick.
The Houston Texans also moved up from 12th to third last year, for the 12th pick, 33rd, plus future first- and third-round selections. However, that trade happened without any of the top quarterbacks on the board, and moving up for a quarterback generally increases the price of the pick.
While the Patriots consider those offers, they’re also certainly doing their prep work on the players who are expected to be among the top picks in the draft and would be realistic picks at third overall – especially the quarterbacks.
Asked about this year’s quarterbacks class, Mayo said the group has grown on him as the evaluation process has gone on. “When I first started watching these guys, it was a three-man race. As you continue to go to these Pro Days and bring guys in on the 30 visits, having time to spend with those guys to really get to know what makes them tick, it’s about five guys honestly that could come in and be a solid quarterback in the future,” he explained.

Based on the context of the conversation it sounded like J.J. McCarthy has joined the initial projected top group of Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye. It’s not clear who the fifth quarterback is, likely between Washington’s Michael Penix and Oregon’s Bo Nix.
Mayo and other top evaluators from the team including de facto GM Eliot Wolf and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt were at the pro days of Caleb Williams and J.J. McCarthy last week, and will be going to see Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye and their pro days this week. It was also reported on Monday that the Patriots had a “lengthy” meeting with McCarthy at his pro day.
As for who has the edge so far in the eyes of the Patriots, Mayo didn’t let on. When asked what he’s looking for in a quarterback, he replied, “one thing you want from a quarterback is a good decision marker. The other thing that often gets lost is just competitiveness and toughness. You see some of the top quarterbacks in the league like those guys get smacked and get right back up. I think that’s very important when you’re scouting the position: a competitor.”
The only quarterback Mayo spoke about individually at length was Maye, who has been linked to the Patriots more than any other quarterback in the pre-draft process. “Drake Maye had a fantastic interview at the combine. He brings a lot of energy. You can tell he has that leadership ability. The exciting part about a guy like Drake Maye is there really is no ceiling with a guy like that,” said Mayo. “I know a lot of people look at the ceiling, but you also have to see how low is the floor? He has a lot of room to grow. He’s a young guy.”
This all comes after Mayo told ESPN’s Mike Reiss on Sunday that “quarterback is definitely a priority” for the Patriots but the team is “still open to any type of deals that come our way.”
Still, Maye or any other quarterback will have to win the front office over fully, even if the position is a “priority” for the team this offseason. “If we take a quarterback at number three, that means we are convicted that this player is really the future of this organization,” Mayo said on Monday, before highlighting the flipside of not using the third overall pick on a quarterback. “There are multiple pieces on this team as a whole that we want to fill those holes. If you can gather more picks, that definitely helps you out, put more chips on the table. But, the more picks that you have, the more chance that you have to actually get them.”
So what did we learn about the Patriots’ plans for the third overall pick from all of this? Pretty much that all plans are possible. “We’re open to trading the pick. We’re open to taking a guy there,” Mayo said.
The Patriots still have a month to make up their mind. They’ll officially be on the clock on Thursday night, April 25.
