Callahan: Don’t expect Drake Maye to practice next couple days
On Tuesday’s Toucher & Hardy program, Andrew Callahan provides an update on Drake Maye’s concussion protocol progress. Plus, Scott Zolak makes a guest appearance via phone call.
Callahan: No Flag on Drake Maye Hit?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Jon Wallach: So, the NFL has an eye-in-the-sky guy for every game. That person is there to protect people after taking hits like the one Drake Maye took. He didn’t look 100 percent right. Why not take him off the field after that hit?
Andrew Callahan: It’s a great question. My colleague at the Boston Herald, Doug Kyed, mentioned that the referee had enough time and wherewithal to ask Maye if he was OK after the play. Maye was down on the ground legitimately for three to four seconds. His teammates were trying to pull him up. And he’s not one to exaggerate or dramatize anything.
The referees didn’t do anything about the hit. No flag. No eye in the sky taking Maye out of the game immediately. They let him finish the drive and he took a sack later on. The refs do miss things from time to time. But even to me, it seemed clear in the press box what was happening at that moment.
Hardy: I’m not trying to be cute about this, but which way were they going on the field? Were they left to right? Where was the spotter sitting in the stadium?
Callahan: Well I guess that depends on your vantage point.
Hardy: The literal eye in the sky concussion spotter is someone in the stadium. Correct?
Callahan: Yes.
Toucher: Zolak is holding on the phone right now.
Hardy: Scott, is the NFL concussion official sitting on the same side of the field as you are during the radio broadcast? Because from your angle, I don’t know if it was as easy to see that Maye took a shot to the head.
Zolak: Great question. I would have to think he’s on our side or up in the press box, right? Or, one of those side suites. Everything on the opposite side of us is all suites for donors and clients. But yeah, from our vantage point, he was moving left to right at about the 30-yard line. And Maye didn’t get up right away. That’s why I was so concerned about the broadcast.
Toucher: Drake Maye looked good, though. Didn’t he?
Callahan: Yes, he did.
Hardy: So, what’s the concussion protocol for him now?
Callahan: He has to go through a series of tests. I think it’s four or five steps to show incremental progress throughout the week. I wouldn’t expect him to practice on Wednesday. But we’ll see every, every brain is different.
