Marc Bertrand: Patriots Are Waiving The White Flag if They Start Jacoby Brissett
On Tuesday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, the guys reacted to a Ian Rapoport being skeptical on the Patriots changing the team’s starting quarterback, and deciding to move to rookie Drake Maye. This resulted in Marc Bertrand making the case that the Patriots would waive the white flag as an organization if they continue to roll out Jacoby Brissett.
“Everyone Has Lost Sight of That…”
Bertrand: Ian Rapoport, he seems kind of down on starting Drake Maye. Seems like he’s not thrilled about the idea.
Zolak: Well, the other three guys are doing so poorly. The other three rookies. I don’t know what he bases that of off.
Bertrand: I just think everybody has completely lost sight of the purpose of having a football team, which is to go out and try and win games. Everyone has lost sight of that.
Zolak: With their best players.
Bertrand: They have been willing to punt on a season and not care about how the team plays on Sunday. When you get to that point, you’ve lost your way.
Zolak: Yep.
Bertrand: You have.
Zolak: A lot of you have.
Bertrand: You’ve got to play your best players and give yourself the best chance to win every single week, when you’re playing at this level in any professional sport. I’m sorry, and I think way too many people have lost sight of that. Drake Maye is a better quarterback than Jacoby Brissett, without ever having played a real meaningful snap at the start of a game in his life. He is. He’s got more ability. He’s going to make some things happen for them. He scrambles a lot. He did those things in college. He’s going to do those things in the NFL. He’s tough, and he always has been. He’s going to be tough when he takes hits at this level. They’re going to find a way to the end zone, which right now they cannot do with the current guy. So I feel like that has just been completely avoided as a topic of conversation. You’re supposed to go out and try and win games. This is waving the white flag. If you keep starting Jacoby Brissett then you’re waving the white flag, and you’re a loser franchise again. I really don’t think any team should ever want to go there or any fan base should ever want to go there.
Zolak: You got your defensive team, and your special teams unit coming into the building each and every week. You look up, “Oh he’s still starting”. Again it’s about convictions, what am I doing this for? Why am I hanging my neck out there? Why am I playing through a shoulder injury? You guys aren’t even playing the best guy.
Bertrand: Yeah.
