Red Sox add one more relief pitcher just before trade deadline
The Red Sox snuck one more deal in just before the trade deadline, acquiring relief pitcher Luis Garcia from the Los Angeles Angels.
The Boston Red Sox started MLB trade deadline day by boosting their bullpen, acquiring relief pitcher Lucas Sims from the Cincinnati Reds. However, Sims didn’t end up being the only addition to the ‘pen on Tuesday.
Just before the 6 p.m. ET deadline, the Sox got one more move in. As first reported by MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the team added Luis Garcia from the Los Angeles Angels.
Garcia, 37, appeared in 45 games for the Angels this season before the trade. The righty has a 3.71 ERA in 43.2 innings, while recording four saves.
This was actually Garcia’s second stint with the Angels. He was also with them in 2019 when their bullpen coach was current Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey.
Garcia comes to the Red Sox as a pending free agent. He signed a one-year, $4.2 million contract with the Angels this past offseason.
The Red Sox are sending four prospects back to the Angels in the deal – corner infielder Niko Kavadas, outfielder Matthew Lugo, and pitchers Ryan Zeferjahn and Yeferson Vargas. Lugo, the team’s 2019 second-round pick, was the highest-ranked of the group coming in at 13th on the SoxProspect.com rankings. Zeferjahn ranked 37th, Vargas 54th, and Kavadas was not included in the latest rankings.
With this move, the book is now closed on the Red Sox 2024 deadline – the first under Craig Breslow. In total the team added four pitchers – starters James Paxton and Quinn Priester and relievers Lucas Sims and Luis Garcia – and catcher Danny Jansen. The team also added reliever Yohan Ramirez off waivers.
